Even though today this park is marked by its carefree nature, it carries a rich culture and history behind it. Its origins date back to colonial times when sidewalks were divided by a railing used to separate white settlers from native Cubans. And its name can be traced to colonel Leoncio Vidal Caro who was murdered in the park at the end of the 19th century.

In 1848 the park was paved and gardens were added. 63 years later, in 1911, La Glorieta was built. La Glorieta was used as space for the municipal band to play in and citizens dance. Today, it maintains its original use and continues to fill the park air with lively Cuban songs and rhythms.

Inside you will find multiple monuments. Some of the more recognized monuments include the Obelisk, made to honour the founded of the city, the Fuente del Niño de la bota infortunada (fountain of the boy with the unfortunate boot), the bust of Leoncio Vidal, and the statue of Marta Abreu. The Santa Clara park’s several monuments contribute, in part, to its liveliness, deemed representative of the island’s spirit. The park used to be home to political conflicts throughout the 20th century. However, this ended with the Cuban Revolution in 1959. It was declared a National Monument in 1999, the 310th anniversary of the founding of Santa Clara, due to its historical significance within the city.

In this same park, those native to Santa Clara can find a space away from all the hustle and bustle of the city. Visitors can join them and relax under the shade of a tree or lie under the warmth of the sun in their beautiful city.
