The great Central Camilo Cienfuegos, also known as Central Hershey till 1959, consists of one of the biggest ancient sugar mills in Cuba, located to the south of Santa Cruz, in the province of Mayabeque. In turn, it is an important testimony to the great productive development from the 20th century.
Built in 1915 and opened a year later, the Central Camilo Cienfuegos used to belong to Hershey Chocolate Company in the beginnings, that used the sugar obtained to sweeten its famous chocolate based in Philadelphia. Its facilities include the sugar refinery, which at the time was the largest proper one in the country.
You can visit the Central Camilo Cienfuegos by Hershey Train, an electric railway departing from Havana and was formerly used to transport sugar canes and extracted sugar. It had a passenger area as well. It is still in operation in spite of being a relic and the mill’s closure in 2002.
