The astonishing Puente de Bacunayagua (Bacunayagua Bridge) comprises the junction of the provinces of Mayabeque and Matanzas in Cuba. With a length of 314 metres and a height of 104 metres over the Bacunayagua River, it is the highest bridge on the island and it is considered one of the seven Cuban civil engineering marvels.
Built between 18956 and 1959, the Bacunayagua Bridge is located in a deep leafy canyon of the Bacunayagua River near the sea and it was built directly on the natural rock. It consists of a giant 47-ton girders and enclosed abutments as well as sturdy piers and symmetrical polygonal arches in the centre.
It was designed by the architect Luis Sáenz Duplace and it was the last piece in the construction of the Vía Blanca, the road running along the Cuban coast and connecting the cities of Havana and Matanzas. Along the way you will have splendid views of the sea and the beaches comprising the northern part of the island as well as the Yumurí Valley on the other side, an amazing plain where significant archaeological remains are preserved.
