The neighbourhood of Vedado is located in the town of Plaza de la Revolución in La Habana.
Thanks to its cultural, economic and social growth, today it is the administrative and political centre of the city as it holds the Central Administration of the State and Government buildings. It is also one of the most international neighbourhoods of the Cuban capital. In it, you can find a number of foreign companies and offices, some of which are inspired by the New York and Miami skylines, such as the well-known Focsa. The quarter’s streets are flooded with cinemas, theatres, museums, and art galleries.
The origins of the quarter date back to the end of the 16th century when the council of La Habana prohibited the construction of roads and sidewalks in an attempt to prevent continuous looting. The city did not gain notoriety until the beginning of the 20th century when wealthy families from old La Habana moved to Vedada because of its proximity to the sea.
Today, Vedado is home to two of the most luxurious hotels; Hotel Nacional de Cuba and the Hotel Habana Libre, which was later taken over by Fidel Castro at the end of the revolution in 1958. It is also home to the Cemetery of Colón, considered one of the most striking cemeteries in the world. Vedado’s main attraction is its internationally-known boardwalk, the Malecón de La Habana.
