Camagüey, a province in the heart of wonderful Cuba, is the third-largest province of this island with 300,000 inhabitants. Here you will be able to see enormous plains full of different species of palms and, standing out in this flat land, the Sierra de Cubitas (Cubitas Mountains) to the north and the Sierra de Najasa (Najasa Mountains) to the south.
It has many beaches and cayos (keys) where you can enjoy its clear waters and fine golden sand that only there you will find. In addition, in some of these keys, such as Cayería Sabana-Camagüey, on the north coast, you will have the opportunity to meet some of the most interesting birds of the region, such as the incredible American pink flamingos. To the south, at cayería Jardines de la Reina you will enjoy a natural and exotic landscape with abundant coral reefs.
Nowadays the capital of this province and the city have the same name, although it is also known by the Cubans themselves as the city of the tinajones due to the number of large clay pots located there.
Camagüey has the largest historical centre in the country. A large part of it was declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008 due to the great diversity of architectural styles that can be found there. These range from buildings from the colonial period to buildings from the Republic period.

The city of Camagüey has a historical centre worth admiring. In its maze-like narrow streets, you will see many colourful houses that give light and life to the place.
There are numerous churches, such as the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen (Nuestra Señora del Carmen Church), the only church with two towers in the city, located in the Plaza del Carmen, one of the most beautiful spaces in Camagüey and where locals spend their time; or the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad (Nuestra Señora de la Soledad Church), located in the Plaza de la Solidaridad, an 18th century church.
If you are looking for green spaces you will find parks like the Parque Ignacio Agramonte (Ignacio Agramonte Park), one of the most historic spaces in the city that has an equestrian statue of Ignacio Agramonte, the protagonist of the Independence War, and the Parque Casino Campestre (Casino Campestre Park), the largest urban park in Cuba.
If you're looking to get out of the city and enjoy nature, Camagüey has spaces like Playa Santa Lucía, about two hours from the city. There you will find a natural and virgin landscape, complete with pure white sand and coconut trees to provide some shade. It also has perfect clear waters for those who love snorkelling and underwater photography.
Another beach you can't miss is Playa los Cocos, in Cayo Sabinal, whose tropical beauty leaves you mesmerized. Here you can rest or swim with a view of the impressive Faro Colón (Columbus Lighthouse).
If you are looking for some privacy, with very few people and virgin beaches, Cayo Cruz will be your special place. A key filled with fine white sand beaches surrounded by crystal clear waters that will make you want to stay there forever.
The best time to travel to Camagüey is between November and May. This is when the temperature is much warmer and there is less chance of rain. Between June and September, hurricanes are usually more common.
If you travel at the beginning of May you can see the Fiesta de Barro y Fuego (Mud and Fire festival) where the city's artisans demonstrate their skills with mud. This event takes place every two years in the Plaza de los Trabajadores. Alternatively, in the month of May, you will find the Fiesta de la Carcoma (Woodworm Festival) where master craftsmen, in a live demonstration, carved wooden pieces.
You can arrive by various means of transport, including bus, plane or rental car.
If you travel from Havana you can take a flight to Aeropuerto Ignacio Agramonte (Ignacio Agramonte Airport), located less than 7 km from the city of Camagüey.
There are also good transportation services to the rest of the country by bus, from Havana, Santiago de Cuba or Varadero.
To get to know Camagüey in-depth and to know how a local lives, you can stay in a casa particular (private house or accommodation). Thanks to its owners, you will have the opportunity to live an unforgettable experience and get to know their day-to-day life as just another local. You will see the interior of their houses, with large courtyards full of light, and colour and the famous tinajones or clay pots that gave their name to this incredible city.
