This island has received several names, but the best known internationally is that of Treasure Island, as immortalized by Robert Louis Stevenson in his novel of the same name.

This Caribbean territory, much less frequented by tourists than the rest of the country, offers countless natural wonders that will make you want to explore this exotic environment. You can witness the life of the sea turtles that lay their eggs in the keys and learn more about these animals at the Granja de las Tortugas (Turtle Farm), the behaviour of the american crocodiles in the Criadero de Cocodrilos (Crocodile Farm) and the sand strips full of native iguanas like Cayo Iguana.
If you are a diving enthusiast, you will be delighted with the underwater caves of Punta Francés, and its plenitud of all kinds of colourful fish. You can undertake an intrepid underwater adventure to the ship graveyard in Bajo de Zambo. You can also enjoy a day of caving in search of the mysterious rock paintings in the Cueva de Punta del Este.
If you simply prefer to relax by lying on the super fine sand under the shade of an elongated coconut tree, you can travel by boat or go sailing to the long strips of Cayo Largo del Sur, a secluded island that is home to some of the most beautiful and magnificent beaches in Cuba.
Formerly known as the Isla de Pinos, the Isla de la Juventud played an important role in the many unfolding events of the Cuban Revolution across the capital its Nueva Gerona, which was founded by the Spanish in 1830.

In the Presidio Modelo the leaders Raúl and Fidel Castro spent two years in confinement, in facilities that are still preserved and can be visited. In addition, national hero José Martí went into exile for seven months at Finca el Abra before his expatriation to Spain in the 19th century. Today it is a museum where visitors can access various documents, letters and furniture of this remarkable figure.
The capital of the island, Nueva Gerona, offers a diverse range of cultural activities, such as the Museo de Historia Natural (Museum of Natural History) or the Museo de la Lucha Clandestina (Lucha Clandestina Museum) The north of the island is densely populated with pine trees and farmland. The cultivation of large grapefruits is famous, and their harvest is celebrated with the Festival de la Toronja (Grapefruit Festival), featuring parades and the sucu-sucu dance. The city of Santa Fe, 17 km from the capital, is frequented for its many springs with therapeutic properties. The tropical forests in the south cannot be missed.
