The city of Ciego de Ávila is the capital of the province bearing the same name, one of the main tourist areas in Cuba. This claim of great significance is not only limited to the city, which offers different and varied attractions but in the group of keys called Jardines del Rey, where you will discover incredible paradisiacal places like the beaches of Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo.

Within the capital, two museums stand out above the rest: the Museo Provincial Simón Reyes (Provincial Museum) and the Museo de Artes Decorativas (Museum of Decorative Arts). In both institutions, you can appreciate the cultural richness of the city, since the first one is considered one of the most important municipal museums of all Cuba, and, the second one, houses a great collection of key historical pieces of the national culture.

The Galería de Arte Provincial (Provincial Art Gallery) is another of the outstanding places in this town since it houses art exhibitions among which one by Raúl Martínez, considered the king of Cuban pop art, stands out.

But Ciego de Ávila is not limited only to its points of cultural interest. It is a town full of life that has other places to offer, among which the Parque Martí stands out, one of the most representative symbols of its urban centre, which is considered to be the heart of the city.

As dates to visit it and enjoy its people and a more lively local atmosphere, we can point out: the 1st of August, when the Emancipación de la Esclavitud is celebrated; in September, when the popular Carnaval Acuático takes place; or in November, with the fiesta of the Bandos Rojo y Azul.

In neighbouring Morón, you can visit the old sugar factory Central Patria o Muerte, its fascinating Museo de Arqueología e Historia (Archaeology and History  Museum). You can also take a tour of the busy railway Terminal, an enclave for communications throughout the island.

In the surrounding area, you will find many places to go hiking in the natural surroundings of Laguna de la Leche, Laguna La Redonda or the Loma de Cunagua. The paths lead to the most remote places. Moreover, you can participate in trout fishing competitions in its lakes.

But without a doubt, the biggest tourist attraction in this area is found in the archipelago Jardines del Rey. You will be able to dive in its coasts to discover the area where there is more than 400 km of coral reef barrier, considered as one of the most important of the whole planet. The great diversity of flora and fauna that it shelters is a real delight for your underwater exploration.

The northern islets, such as Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo, are must-see places because of their unparalleled beauty, among which are paradisiacal strips of sand and beautiful natural landscapes. In the keys, you can do water sports such as fishing or diving, or boat trips, where you will enjoy small sea outings on its placid waters. On the shore, you will be able to see the famous pink flamingos running around the puddles.

The most highly rated beach is undoubtedly Playa Pilar, located in Cayo Guillermo, one of the most renowned beaches in the world. It stands out for its natural properties that remain almost untouched by humans, as well as for its fine shiny sand and clean transparent waters.
