In the west of Havana we find Mayabeque, a province quite new and the smallest one in Cuba. The splendour of Mayabeque lives in its rural and tranquil environment where nature's balance meets the height of its green hills and the many gardens decorating it.
Mayabeque started out in life on the 1st of August 2010 together with Artemisa from the separation of the old province of Havana. Its name comes from the Mayabeque River and the beach of the same name. We can find these on the south coast of the province.
Mayabeque is the perfect place for the ones searching for disconnection, as it is a very popular holiday destination among Cubans as well as foreigners. We especially have to emphasise the Jibacoa Beach, a coastal Caribbean seabed area decorated with enormous coral reefs and surrounded by green vegetation where you can relax in the hot peaceful beaches and enjoy many great activities, such as diving or hiking.
Enjoy the grand splendour of landscapes at Parque Escaleras de Jaruco (Escaleras de Jaruco Park), a natural protected area where we find rare species like the white butterfly (National Flower of Cuba). We also have to highlight the beautiful Jardines de Hershey (Hershey Gardens) where you can stroll nicely outside.
Mayabeque in turn possesses indigenous cultural splendour from the colonial era that we can see reflected in its daily life. You will find remains of indigenous aboriginal culture in the lovely village of Jaruco, the first settlement of these ancient populations, and the Surgidero de Batabanó, the first settlement of Spanish colonists before turning into Havana.
Another sign of the grand magnificence of the Mayabeque area from the colonial era is the Central Camilo Cienfuegos, an old sugar mill, which is the largest and most important on the island. The sugar was transported by the famous Hershey Train, an electric relic still in use that will undoubtedly transport you to another era.
Find the highest bridge in Cuba in Mayabeque, the Puente de Bacunayagua (Bacunayagua Bridge), an architectonic marvel in a deep canyon joining the provinces of Mayabeque and Matanzas from where you are able to admire the mind-boggling Valle del Yumurí (Yumurí Valley).
The best time to visit Mayabeque is during the dry months from December to February, where you can totally enjoy the gorgeous beaches and the beauty of nature in all its glory. In August takes place Verano en Jibacoa (Summer in Jibacoa), a free music festival offering you the most Cuban sounds.
