The only official currency of Cuba is the Cuban Peso (CUP) since on January 1, 2021 the Cuban Convertible Peso (CUC) was eliminated.
Until then, the monetary system was one of the most complex aspects when planning your trip, since it had two official currencies, Cuban Pesos (CUP), and Cuban Convertible Pesos (CUC).
The Convertible Peso was always equal to 1 US dollar. After the elimination of the CUC, a value of 24 CUP per CUC was established.
It is worth mentioning that both the payment in US dollars and the exchange of currency from the dollar to the Cuban peso are no longer subject to the payment of the 10% tax, as it was a measure repealed in July 2020.
ATMs in Cuba are RED and ATM, they work 24 hours, although sometimes they can be found in maintenance service or out of service. Cuba does not have ATMs in all its cities, therefore before visiting a small city or town you should make sure you have cash.
The economy in Cuba works mainly through the use of cash, however you can use credit / debit cards to make payments in many places such as hotels, resorts, restaurants, etc. The most used credit cards are Visa and Mastercard. Keep in mind that in Cuba, cards that have been issued in the United States or American banks are not accepted.
