The Fuerte de La Loma (Fort of La Loma), also called Castillo de Salcedo (Salcedo Castle), is a unique fortress in Cuba and Latin America, located in the municipality of Puerto Padre (Father Port) and built in the 19th century for the defence of this strategic port city.
The construction of this fort was initiated in 1869 and the place chosen was the top of a hill that dominates both the sea and town, a truly strategic position for the defence of the town. With its two towers in the background, its two turrets in front and its sidewalls with more than 80 loopholes for firing, the fort on the hill was a bastion of defence.
Declared a National Monument on November 4, 1981, today it houses an interesting museum that presents objects such as old weapons or documents of the time.
In front of this imposing castle stands the statue of the rebel army commander Paco Cabrera, a symbol of the struggle for freedom.
