La Jornada Cucalambeana (Cucalambeana Festival) is a great rural contest within which there are artistic presentations and cultural representations of the traditional tunera popular culture. This event, the most important of Las Tunas, takes place every year from the end of June to the beginning of July in order to pay homage to Juan Cristóbal Nápoles Fajardo, celebrated Cuban Poet of the 19th century known colloquially as El Cucalambé.
The event takes place on the farm of El Cornito, the former home of Juan Cristóbal Nápoles Fajardo, and a multitude of exhibitions, contests, fairs, parties, and a local beauty queen is elected in a contest known as La Flor de Birama.
In short, these are days that seek to preserve both spiritual and material samples of traditional culture and contribute to disseminating the literary, oral and musical forms of the Tunero peasantry.
Thus, in addition to stimulating the cultural movement within rural communities, they make local customs known beyond the city limits and successfully fulfil a dual function, all in a cheerful and authentic atmosphere.
