The Memorial a los Mártires de Barbados was founded in 1978 in the city of Las Tunas, on the banks of the Hórmigo River, Cuba. This memorial is dedicated to the victims of the tragic Crime of Barbados, a terrorist attack on a flight bound for Havana that killed 73 people in 1976, including some of the members of the Cuban sports delegation returning to the country.
The museum is located in the house of one of the martyrs, Carlos Miguel Leyva Gonzalez, with an American design. It was rebuilt over the years, but without losing the essence or structure it had at the time and has three neat rooms to contemplate the various exhibitions.
The first room, the Civil Room, includes documents and evidence of the crime, with impressive photos and even pieces of the plane. In the next room, the Social Room is the one that presents personal objects, including belongings of the Cuban fencers Carlos Miguel and Leonardo McKenzie Grant. The Sports Room focuses on the professional sports aspect of the deceased and also shows images of the IV Central American and Caribbean Championship, the event from which they were returning the day they died.
It is worth visiting the patio, where you can contemplate a sculpture by Juan Heznart Hedrich, entitled "Our dead raising their arms", which won the National Prize at the National Salon of the UNEAC in 1978.
