Poblado Cocodrilo (Crocodile Village) in the south of the Isla de la Juventud, in Cuba, is a small rural settlement inhabited by about 400 people, 100 km from Nueva Gerona. Here you can discover a place far from the urban hustle and bustle. It is in harmony with the beautiful natural environment that surrounds it, full of exuberant vegetation and embellished by the blue waters of the Caribbean Sea.
Poblado Cocodrilo was founded in 1902 by a young English crocodile hunter who traded between the Caribbean territories of Cuba and the Islas Caimán. Two years later, his family and those of the other first settlers decided to name the place Jacksonville, after the first settler's surname.
For this reason, one can still sense the English style in the structures of some of its homes, as well as in the Lutheran church. Some of its neighbours still preserve this language.
The area remains a fishing village on the coast, although its inhabitants over the years have carried out various activities such as hunting, agriculture, the charcoal market and wood.
