The Museo Finca el Abra (Finca el Abra Museum) on the Isla de la Juventud, Cuba, was home to Cuban national hero José Martí for nine months before his expatriation to Spain. You can visit the site as it was known at the time by the revolutionary leader, 3 km from Nueva Gerona, on the road to the Hotel El Colony.
The Museo Finca el Abra displays the room where the hero stayed. Some of his personal belongings are still preserved, like the documents he wrote and the furniture he used to use.
The property still belongs to the descendants of Giuseppe Girondella, the man who took Martí in 1870 and is a true reflection of the life and customs of the houses of the time. The environment is surrounded by the mountains of the Sierra de las Casas.
José Martí took refuge in this grand house after serving a sentence of hard labour in Havana, when he was only 17 years old. Here he was able to regain his health and recover from the wounds caused by the shackles he had worn in prison. Nine months later he was expatriated to Spain.
