Presidio Modelo (Model Prison) is one of the most peculiar and essential visits in Isla de la Juventud, Cuba. It has gone down in history for having served as a captive for Fidel Castro and the rest of the Moncada rebels, between 1953 and 1955.
Today it functions as an unusual museum where you can visit its facilities, where the Cuban leader was held for two years, its watchtowers and the hospital building. The large circular outside structures, already in ruins, will transport you to the past, and you can discover what the inmates' living conditions were like.
The prison dates back to President Gerardo Machado's regime and was inspired by the Jolliet prison in Illinois, USA.
During the Second World War it was a prison for hundreds of Japanese, German and Italian prisoners who were on the island.
