Cueva de los Portales (Cave of the Portals)is located in the region of Pinar del Río, in the western part of Cuba. You can visit this hidden cave, which served as headquarters for the commander Che Guevara during the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962.
The cave was declared a National Monument in 1980. Today it serves as an open-air museum that preserves several of Che's belongings, such as his bed or the table where he played chess.
The cave is located in a remote mountain area, surrounded by steep hills covered with vines.
On the same hillside there are three other caves: El Espejo, El Salvador and Cueva Oscura.
You can also watch the birds that often fly over this place. You can arrange visits at the Hotel Mirador or ask the people in charge at the entrance of the cave.
