The Gran Caverna de Santo Tomás (St. Tomas’ Gran Cavern) is the largest cave system on the island of Cuba and the second largest in the Americas. It is composed of more than 46 km of galleries in eight levels, of which 1 km is open to visitors. Get into this unforgettable underground adventure on your way through Pinar del Río.
The cave does not have an artificial lighting system, but explorers are provided with headlights for the 90 minutes guided tour. Inside, the numerous stalactites and stalagmites, underground pools and other interesting rock formations, as well as a replica of an ancient Indian mural, stand out. You will also be able to see the bats passing around you.
It is advisable to contact the Escuela de Espeleología (Caving School) for more information when planning your arrival. The visitor's centre offers a small museum with those personal objects related to the Cuban scientist Antonio Núñez Jiménez.
