The Plantación de Tabaco Alejandro Robaina (Alejandro Robaina tobacco plantation) is located in the southwestern area of Pinar del Río, Cuba. The island is the largest producer of tobacco in the world and the region of Pinar del Rio is probably the crown jewel. In this fascinating terrain, you will be able to observe the process of cultivation of the tobacco plants that are used to make the traditional Cuban cigars, which are exported internationally.
The Vuelta Abajo region where this plantation is located is known throughout the island for its quality tobacco cultivation. This agricultural activity began in 1845, but it was not until 1997 when the brand Vegas Robaina was launched on the market, after which it began to reap great international success.
Much of its success was due to the work of its founder, who died in 2010, who led the Robaina family business. For a few years now, the facilities have been open to tourists so that they can learn how these particular plants are grown.
The tobacco growing season extends from October to February, so this is the best time to visit. It is advisable to call in advance if you wish to come to the site.
You can access the plantation through the Central Highway to the southwest of Pinar del Río for 18 km, then turn left and go left again another 4 km later.
