The city of Sancti Spíritus was founded in 1514 by Don Diego Velázquez, and years later it became the capital of the province. This beautiful city maintains its historical essence, as there are still buildings from more than 300 years ago, like the Iglesia Parroquial Mayor and the Puente del río Yayabo (Yayabo river bridge), both examples of colonial architecture. The historical centre was recognized as a National Monument in 1978.
This colourful city invites tourists from all corners of the world for a visit. It is a living example of colonial history, as there are buildings from this period that remain intact. Some of these buildings are the Iglesia Parroquial Mayor de San Juan Bautista, which was built in 1680 and the Museo de Arte Colonial, an old palace and the first two-story building in the city.
On your trip to this charming town, you can't miss the Biblioteca Municipal de Sancti Spíritus, a neoclassical architectural work and the huge Presa de Zaza, the largest reservoir in the country.
