The Sierra de Escambray, also known as the Macizo de Guamuhaya, is a mountain range in Cuba that crosses the provinces of Sancti Spíritus, Cienfuegos and Villa Clara. This mountainous range, full of trails, is known for its valleys, rivers, crystalline waterfalls and tropical forests, and for being a natural reserve for the island's fauna.
The highest point of Escambray is Pico San Juan, also known as La Cuca, more than 1140 meters high will make you see the historic Trinidad from a bird's eye view. At the top of Pico San Juan is a spherical building that is simply a weather radar.
Without a doubt, there are two places you can't miss in the Sierra de Escambray: El Nicho and the Parque Natural Topes de Collantes (Topes de Collantes Natural Park).
El Nicho is a group of waterfalls and natural pools. Its crystalline waters, in the middle of the Sierra de Escambray, are the main attraction of this dreamlike place.
The Parque Natural Topes de Collantes, in Trinidad, is a protected natural reserve, declared a World Heritage Site in 1988. In this place, you will be able to walk through trails between rivers, valleys, waterfalls, cliffs and caves while enjoying the Cuban flora and fauna. The Salto del Caburní, a spectacular waterfall, is without a doubt one of the greatest attractions of this natural park.
