The Puente del río Yayabo (Yayabo river Bridge) in Sancti Spíritus stands in the heart of this province of Cuba, in the old Paso de las Carretas, making it possible to access the Barrio de Colón. Its architectural design highlights the characteristics of the art from the colonial period. The material used in its construction was mortar, which has been intact since it was ordered to be built in 1817 and finished in 1831. It is 9 meters high and 85 meters long. Some scholars say it was once green.
The bridge was built thanks to the people, donations from different religious groups and the labour of people in prison. Contemplating the waters of the Río Yayabo from this magnificent architectural work is a real privilege. The spiritual people consider it the most precious bridge in all Cuba, unique in its style and greatness. You cannot leave Sancti Spíritus without crossing this colonial work and feeling a little bit of history under your feet.
