The spectacular Castillo de Nuestra Señora de los Angeles de Jagua, known simply as Castillo de Jagua, was one of the three most important 18th century fortresses in the country. It stands on top of Bahía de Jagua, in the south of the Cienfuegos province in Cuba. It is also considered a small museum.
Built in 1745, the Castillo de Jagua has a Renaissance style that is splendidly displayed in all its architecture. The moat that surrounds it and the spectacular drawbridge that connects the main entrance with the interior, supported by large pillars, are outstanding. It was declared a National Monument in 1978.
The area has a fascinating naval history where this magnificent fortress is the main attraction. It was originally used to spot pirate ships and keep them away. It was the scene of numerous battles, and came to be one of the strongest and most important fortresses in Cuba, after those of Havana and Santiago de Cuba.
Know the Cienfuegos naval history in this castle that is also conceived as a museum, and admire the extraordinary views of Bahía de Jagua that it offers you. You will be able to gaze at the extensive blue sea and even make out the furrow left by the ships that pass through the channel. Enjoy also a pleasant ferry ride, which will take you to Cienfuegos for only 1 CUC.
