The small and charming municipality of Palmira is nationally known for its Santeria brotherhoods, unique in the region, as well as for its rich Yoruba and rural culture. It is located south of Cienfuegos, Cuba.
The culture of the town of Palmira is very peculiar, since it has traditions coming from the highly consolidated African Yoruba culture. This ancient African society settled in this area in the colonial era due to slavery and now has a very significant importance.
Among the main Yoruba festivals that stand out in Palmira are the Fiesta de Santa Bárbara and the Procession de Santa Barbara, dedicated to one of the most beloved Orisha deities in the town. The Fiestas Bembé, in which the streets are filled with the joyful sounds of drums and fun dances.
The Santeria brotherhoods are another major attraction of Palmira, among which the Sociedad Santa Bárbara, Sociedad El Cristo and Sociedad San Roque stand out. You can learn more about them in the interesting Palmira Museum.
