The Cementerio La Reina, also known as the Cementerio General, is the oldest cemetery in Cienfuegos, Cuba. It was declared a National Monument in 1819 and it combines the elements of respect, beauty and majesty.
The construction of the Cementerio La Reina represents the splendor of the 19th century. Thanks to this funeral construction, today we can know how the civilians were buried in that epoch. It is the only cemetery where the bodies were buried in niches, due to the high level of underground water.
You will see its splendid neoclassical style in its main courtyard, and in the beautiful and numerous marble sculptures that decorate it. Among them is the famous Sleeping Beauty (La Bella Durmiente), the statue bears the famous legend and has become a symbol.
