The Parque Nacional Alejandro de Humboldt (Alejandro de Humboldt National Park) is one of the main treasures of Cuba, located in the northeastern part of Baracoa between Holguín and Guantánamo. It owes its name to a homonymous scientist who during one of his expeditions found an idyllic place in 1800. This very find is so significant, that he is known under a pen name of “the second discoverer of Cuba”.
The 594 square km and 2,642 ha this heavenly treasure covers are characterized by a rich biodiversity consisting of different types and sizes of interesting species, some of them endangered or ice age survivors. These are some very good reasons to a highly determined protection of the area established by the expert's detailed study. It is not strange, that the park is the main touristic resource not only of the Guantánamo province, but of the entire island. To top it off, the park was declared as a World Heritage Site in 2001.
