The Zoológico de Piedras (Stone Zoo) located in Cuba precisely on the mountain next to Alto de Boquerón village, in the previous farm of San Lorenzo. It is just like a normal park (with a previously planned route that guides the visitor during the excursion, rich and leafy vegetation…) that singles out thanks to the 1,000 metre area occupied by more that 400 stone sculptures in the form of animal, local species as well as foreign ones. They are carved mostly by Ángel Ínigo Blanco, a pioneer of this thematic field in 1977. Many sculptures were carved by his son Ángel Íñigo Pérez who was native as well.
If your holiday destination is Guantánamo you have to take a closer look at this place, as it is the perfect mixture of the most inherent essence of the nature and local history of two men who noticed that they like to fulfill a dream. Afterwards, the place turned into the most famous touristic resource in the whole province which the two men didn’t expect at all. This proves that their taste in art can be considered as an altruistic activity which they thought wasn’t profitable.
During your stay you will get to know hundreds of animals you have never heard of whilst breathing clean air. Besides, you will be amazed by the adventures of a man who one day decided that he fancied new experiences and started to sculpt a lion and how that led to that defined technique and efficiency. The number of tourists who fancy having a walk and enjoying this eye-catching environment is over 10,000. No wonder this place was recognized as cultural patrimony in 1985.
