The Viaducto La Farola (La Farola Viaduct) is located on the Sagua mountain and at the moment it is the only road that joins the Guantánamo and Baracoa municipalities. Precaution is needed during the one-hour trajectory, depending on the speed and keeping in mind that this is a mountain road where bends lead the way. Fortunately, those 55 km provide you with green sceneries with diverse local plantations, a viewpoint and nine suspension bridges which will leave you staggered.
The construction works of this road started by order of Fulgencio Batista under Isoba García’s command who reached the presidency in 1940, but the Baracoan noticed his darkened luck when the project came to a halt because of difficulties caused by the terrain and lack of income. It was Fidel Castro who continued with the project once the war was over. It acted as a sign of gratitude for his participation in the war. More to the point, his dedication is considered as a civil engineering treasure, which nowadays forms part of national patrimony. This is one of the many reasons you should visit this place.
