The Parque Martí (Martí Park) is located in the city centre of Guantánamo and makes up the heart of this Cuban city since its creation in 1930. It started out in life as a recreational area for locals and tourists. For these people it is also a point of interest, because previously it was a place where the Spanish soldiers settled and made their plans. This was the chosen place for eight palm trees to honour veterans of May 20, 1902, the day when Tomás Estrada Palma took the lead.
In this park you have pedestrian streets, statues and a cathedral as well as long banks where you can rest. Its fascinating green areas and tall palm trees convert this place into an ecosystem inside the urban centre.
It is normal that the name behind the park, José Martí, has his own statue, a work of Logia Masónica which dates back to 1953 and is sitting and reading, possibly as a sign of his wisdom. This sculpture is next to three palms and a garden which represent the flag of Cuba symbolically. More to the point, the main attraction of this park is the Catedral de Santa Catalina de Ricci (Santa Catalina de Ricci Cathedral). It was built in 1843 and it has undergone various restoration processes of Catholic tradition. In the front of it you can admire the monument in honour of Pedro Agustín Pérez, who was the first mayor of Guantánamo and a fundamental member of the liberating army.
