The Fuerte Matachín (Matachín Fort) located in the eastern part of Baracoa, Cuba, houses the Museo Municipal de Baracoa (Municipal Museum of Baracoa) nowadays. We are talking about a fortification whose objective was to deny enemies’ access to the city. The origin of the name comes from the chosen place for cow killings which the Spanish troops ate afterwards, as one way or another they had to eat after long fights.
The fortress has totally lost its function, although it dates back to the beginning of the 19th century. The fortress was turned into the Municipal Museum in 1981. In the museum you can discover various collections, such as the local history of the same village collection, characteristic flora and vegetation collection and the collection of the most distinguished figures, like Magdalena Menasse.
