The neo-gothic Catedral Santa Clara de Asís (Cathedral of Saint Clare of Assisi) was built in 1923 in Santa Clara. Today, this majestic building in the center of the city is known as the Notre Dame of Cuba due to its unparalleled beauty and elaborate stained glass windows depicting scenes from the New Testament.
The cathedral has been restored and rebuilt several times since the 17th century, thus contributing to its great conservation. And even though Cuba is not an extremely Catholic country, its cultural and historical diversity has paved the way for the cathedral’s several reconstructions.
The Catedral Santa Clara de Asís is also famous for housing a beautiful white marble statue of the Virgin Mary, an ancient image of Saint Clare of Asís from which the cathedral derives its name and a marble baptismal font.
