Plaza Martí (Martí Square) or Parque José Martí (José Martí Park) is located in the center of the city of Remedios in the province of Villa Clara, Cuba. The plaza was constructed in 1852 by the first settlers in the colonial city who believed that the people of the town deserved, at least, a park.
However, the layout of the park we see today is not the original one, but one built after the revolutionary forces triumphed in 1960. It is the only plaza in Cuba that is house to two churches: Parroquia Mayor de San Juan Bautista (Church of St. John the Baptist) and the Iglesia del Buen Viaje (Our Lady of the Good Voyage Church).
Plaza Martí is considered so important the rest of the city of Remedios was built around it. It is the hub of all social, cultural, and economic activities in the city. And, in the centre of the park, visitors can find a colonial-style gazebo that doubles as a stage for late-night concerts and stand-ups.
If you’re looking for something more in touch with the city and Remedios natives, Plaza Martí is the place to be as older neighbours gather at the square and share stories about the area. It is a perfect place to be transported back in time and the surrounding buildings colonial and neoclassic styles are sure to help liven the journey.
