The Monumento a la Toma del Tren Blindado (Taking of the Armored Train Monument) is located on the eastside of Parque Leoncio Vidal (Leoncio Vidal Park) in Santa Clara. It is at this same site that history was made during the Cuban Revolution.
On December 29, 1958, a group of revolutionaries led by Commander Che Guevara derailed an armoured train with the help of a bulldozer and handmade explosives. After a battle that lasted about 90 minutes, the rebels emerged victoriously. This paved way for the beginning of Fidel Castro’s socialist regime and the end of Batista’s dictatorship.
Today, the trains wagon house permanent exhibitions of photographs, objects, and documents depicting the Revolution.
Make sure to stop by this picturesque National Monument and learn about Cuba’s rich history.
