The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen (Our Lady of Carmen Church), in the city of Santa Clara, is one of the oldest buildings in the province of Villa Clara, Cuba. It is a neoclassical construction built-in 1748 making it almost 300 years old. Take a moment and explore the church, which served as a prison during the country’s War for Independence in the 19th century.
At the steps of the church, visitors will find the Parque del Carmen (Carmen Park). It is there that a priest and 18 families from the neighbouring Remedios founded the city of Santa Clara in 1689. Today, a tamarind tree and monument where the names of the families are engraved, stand on the same spot the city was founded.
Both the park and the church have been declared National Monuments due to their historical value.
