The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje (Our Lady of the Good Voyage Church) is located in the centre of Remedios, found in the province of Villa Clara, Cuba. Also known as the Iglesia del Buen Viaje (Church of Good Voyage), this Cuban colonial jewel, that dates back to 1600, crowns over the skies of Remedios.
Even though the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje may seem simpler than the neighbouring Iglesia Parroquial Mayor de San Juan Bautista (Church of St. John the Baptist), its architectural value and fame amongst the people of the city make it worth visiting.
Moreover, the church’s history is one worth discovering. Legend has it that the figure of the virgin inside the church chose the city of Remedios as her home. It is a figure that continues to be revered by locals today regardless of its small size. Some locals even choose to baptize their children by the virgin. And another way locals pay homage to the church: naming their child, male or female, “Buenviaje”.
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje has proven to be more than a place of worship for the townspeople of Remedios. Even after fleeing Remedios in 1869 and settling in the neighbouring city of Santa Clara, the people did not forget their place of worship. Settlers quickly founded another church with the same name in honour of the one they had left behind.
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje’s architectural relevance and emotional value make it a site worth visiting for tourists and the local population.
