The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje (Our Lady of Good Voyage Church) is located in the city of Santa Clara, Cuba. The cathedral’s eclectic design mixes Gothic, Romanesque, and Neoclassical styles making it all the more worth visiting.
The church was originally built out of wood and guano in 1713. However, it was been reconstructed several times since then: in 1743, thirty years after its construction, the church was rebuilt with masonry and tiles; and from 1762 to 1764 the church’s roof was brought up to date and the dome was built.
In 1925 many chapels were demolished, but the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje was not making it the oldest church in Santa Clara. That same year, the church underwent a complete reformation. In 1940, a second building was added to the church’s structure, which was used as a nursery school. The following year the church was opened for worship and, finally, in 1950, a dome was added and the building was expanded.
Today, it is considered one of the oldest churches in the province of Villa Clara and the third oldest in the city of Santa Clara.
