The Museo Provincial Abel Santamaría (Villa Clara Provincial Museum) in Santa Clara is located above the barracks where government forces once surrendered to rebel troops in the province of Villa Clara, Cuba. Inside the museum visitors can enjoy a large number of objects related to the liberation of the city, Che Guevara’s soldiers, a unique natural and social history collection, and an exhibition dedicated to Cuban women during the revolution.
The museum was originally a Spanish military barrack. However, after the War for Independence in 1898, the barracks were abandoned. Five years later, they were transformed into an office for the chief of the Las Villas and Guardia Rural forces. During the Battle of Santa Clara in 1958, the barracks took up a new responsibility. It served as a refuge for Che’s revolutionary forces. It was not until 1970 that the Museo Provincial Abel Santamaría opened its doors.
The exhibitions inside the museum are spread out across four rooms. They are dedicated to the history of the indigenous peoples on the island, the life of Samuel Feijóo, a Cuban writer, the natural sciences, and the arts. The art exhibition displays Neolithic ceramics.
