The Museo de Agroindustria Azucarera Marcelo Salado (Marcelo Salado Sugar Industry Museum) is located in the center of Caibarién, a town in the province of Villa Clara, Cuba. The museum is housed inside the town’s old sugar mill, renovated to function as a museum.
In the middle of the 19th century, government authorities commissioned the development of a railway for the town of Caibarién. The railway would transport sugar from the town to various points across the province of Villa Clara.
Today, this picturesque museum recounts the history of the industry and the important role the railway played in its development.
The museum showcases videos about the Cuban sugar tradition, what it is like to work with sugar, and shows the original machinery of the mill. It also houses a collection of 19th-century steam locomotives in a section known as the Museo del Vapor (Steam Museum). It is where visitors can find the largest locomotive in all of Latin America.
