Visitors can find the Museo de las Parrandas Remedianas (Parrandas Remedianas Museum) in the city of Remedios in Villa Clara, Cuba. The museum is perfect for those who miss out on the Parrandas festivities during the vibrant Christmas season.
The museum, dedicated solely to the festivity, displays costumes, scale models, photographs, and objects used during the Parrandas celebrations over the years in order to show how the celebration has evolved. Some of the scale models inside the museum are 30 meters high.
The famous Parrandas festival traces back to the 14th century when children were sent around the city with pots to wake up every member of the town for mass. Three centuries later, the Parrandas festival is recognized as one of the most popular celebrations across the Caribbean.
The festivities begin on December 24th at 10:00 pm with a battle of colours and fireworks between the rival neighbourhoods of El Carmen and El Salvador every year. Afterwards, parade floats make their way across the city before another round of fireworks closes the night.
Over the years the neighbouring towns of Caibarién and Camajuani have adopted the festivities, very similar to the Parrandas, as their own.
