The Mausoleo de Ernesto Che Guevara (Che Guevara Mausoleum) sculptures, commonly recognized as the Plaza Che Guevara, is located in the city of Santa Clara, Cuba. Visitors can tour the Mausoleum, which has been transformed into a pilgrimage destination and visit the remains of the famous revolutionary.
The site honours the memory of the soldiers involved in the Battle of Santa Clara, where Fulgencio Batista’s government army was assaulted, had their ammunition stripped, and was, ultimately, defeated in 1958. Today, the city has dedicated a series of sculptures: La Plaza de la Revolución (Revolution Square) and La Tribuna (The Tribune), to this battle as well as commander Ernesto Guevara de la Serna.
The sculpture’s visitors can find flowers for Guevara, a memorial where the remains of the guerilla soldiers have lied since 1997, and a mural that commemorates the twentieth anniversary of Che’s death. The mural depicts different stages of the revolution, among them the Battle of Santa Clara. In this image “Che” is meant to personify the idea of liberation.
One of the wagons of the train derailed by “Che” and his soldiers during the Battle of Santa Clara has been transformed into a museum, which houses several of the Commander’s personal objects. Through them, visitors are told the story of the rebel commander’s life: his birth, childhood in Argentina, and death in Bolivia.
Even though Che was not born and raised in Cuba, he continues to be venerated throughout the country, especially in Santa Clara. To all of the inhabitants of the city, “Che” is a hero. If you visit the Mausoleum, where Che’s remains are buried, you are bound to pick on some of this energy. Visitors are asked to enter with their head uncovered, not to take pictures and to remain silent throughout their visit.
The mausoleum was built in 1987 to pay homage to the soldiers and rebel leaders who brought an end to Batista’s dictatorship. In 1997 the Guevara’s remains were repatriated to Cuba from Bolivia, so the guerilla fighter could rest in the complex. And in 2011 the memorial received the Provincial Conservation Award.
