The Teatro La Caridad (La Caridad Theater) is a historic 19th-century building located in the city of Santa Clara, Cuba. The theater, located near the Parque Leoncio Vidal (Leoncio Vidal Park) in the city center, carries great amounts of patrimonial and architectural value making it a site worth visiting during your tour of Santa Clara.
In 1885, the renowned city native writer, Marta Abreu de Estévez, carried out the construction of the theater as a gift to the residents of Villa Clara. The theater was built upon the same site where the Ermita de la Candelaria (Candelaria Chapel) first church of Santa Clara once stood. Today, visitors can find an image of the chapel embroidered on the curtain of the theater in commemoration. The dome of the building is also worth paying close attention to as it is decorated with exquisite frescoes painted by Camilo Salaya.
Since its inauguration, the Teatro La Caridad has been one the most reputable cultural centers not only in the city of Santa Clara but across the entire island of Cuba. Important theater companies and some of the most renowned figures of the national art scene have performed upon this stage.
The Teatro La Caridad is one of the few colonial theaters that remain in Cuba. Because of this, the theater was declared a National Monument in 1981.
