The Pedraplén (Cayo Santa María Road) is a massive over-the-sea viaduct that connects the province of Villa Clara with the famous Cayos del Norte (Northern Keys), home to Cayo Santa María (Saint Mary Keys) and the Cayo Ensenachos (Ensenachos Keys), some of the most beautiful beaches on the island.
This 48-kilometre-long engineering Marve,l constructed over the waters of the Caribbean, is actually eco-friendly as those in charge of the project did not want to interfere with the fauna and flora of the Bahia de Buenavista (Buensavista Bay), declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. The 45 bridges that make up the Pedraplén were built to blend in with nature as smoothly as possible. It is this that earned the Pedraplén the Puente de Alcántara International Prize for best Ibero-American Construction in 1998-2000. It also received a replica of the Yate Granma.
Today, the Pedraplén has become a tourist spot. Visitors can snap a few pictures with groups of flamingos living on the side of the road or take advantage of the natural beauty of the area to take some post-card perfect photographs. Those driving across the roadway will feel like their flying over the ocean. Regardless, the Pedraplén is sure to be a unique and unforgettable experience.
