The Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria (Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria), or simply the Catedral de Camagüey (Cathedral of Camagüey), is one of the most important ecclesiastical buildings in Cuba, as well as being a World Heritage Site since 2008. Declared cathedral in 1912 and Minor Basilica in 2014 by Pope Francisco, it is dedicated to the worship of the Virgin of Candelaria, patron saint of the city. It also has an excellent location near Parque Ignacio Agramonte (Ignacio Agramonte Park).
The building was built in the 18th century, but its present appearance comes from its rehabilitation in 1864. Apart from its spaciousness and the beauty of its altars, what is most remarkable is its enormous bell tower located at the top of the tower. The views from here are spectacular, as you get a perfect panorama of the whole city. You can perfectly appreciate the different churches and all the characteristic red roofs,a symbol of colonial architecture.
On the other hand, if your visit coincides with the weekend, you will be able to enjoy the rehearsals of the children's choir that take place inside the building.
