The renowned Plaza de San Juan de Dios (San Juan de Dios Square) is a National Monument declared a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO. It dates back to the year 1728 and is considered to be the most important architectural colonial set of the villa of Puerto Príncipe, nowadays Camagüey, in Cuba.
In it, one finds the church and the former Hospital San Juan de Dios. Inside the church, there is an image of the Holy Trinity, carved in wood in 1792. The Holy Spirit is represented in human form, one of the only two pieces of this style that exist in Latin America.
The former hospital functions as an important museum and also as a Centro Provincial de Patrimonio Cultural (Provincial Cultural Heritage Center). Here, the remains of the outstanding Major General Ignacio Agramonte y Loynaz are displayed from the day he fell on the battlefield and, a century later, a song was dedicated to him as a tribute and a monument was built in his honour.
In the square, you can see elements of the colonial era, such as covers, wide doors, windows with turned wooden balusters, colourful colonial houses and unique sculptures of slaves carrying out their daily work inside the square.
In short, Plaza San Juan de Dios is a pleasant cultural and historical space worth stopping to visit, as well as enjoying its attractive programs designed for both national and international tourists.
