The peculiar Iglesia Santo Cristo del Buen Viaje (Santo Cristo del Buen Viaje Church) was built in the 18th century on the outskirts of Camagüey in Cuba. Its initial design had two naves, although a third one and a high tower were added in 1840. This is how it looks as we know it today.
Its main facade is very simple with a tower topped by a small dome and the right side facade and has the same compositional scheme. It contains elements of clearly Baroque influence but also, in some forms we can see Herrerian references interpreted by the colonial architecture, making this church an interesting cultural visit.
What makes this church so special is that it is the only one on the island with a necropolis in the courtyard, with vaults and pantheons. The rest of the churches eliminated the cemeteries in the areas where they were located and with it all the ornamentation related to this practice.
During the Ten Years' War, from 1868 to 1878, it was used as a barracks by the Spanish troops. Later, it served as a hospital where the patients of cholera that struck the town at that time lived.
