The Plaza de los Trabajadores is one of the main meeting points of the charming city of Camagüey, in Cuba. Triangular in shape and located in the historical heart of the city, it bears this name because from the 1960s onwards the city's workers began to carry out various public activities of a commercial, cultural and historical nature.
Years ago, this square was known as the Plaza de la Merced, because the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Merced (Church of Nuestra Señora de la Merced) was built in the same place in 1748, and it has a magnificent silver tomb inside. In addition to this church, it is worth stopping to see the Museo Casa Natal de Ignacio Agramonte (Birthplace of Ignacio Agramonte), which dates back to the 18th century and is filled with objects and belongings of this Cuban historical figure. The third element that must be visited is the current Centro de Convenciones y Casa de Cultura (Convention Center and Culture House), former headquarters of the Sociedad de Instrucción y Recreo Santa Cecilia (Santa Cecilia Instruction and Recreation Society).
The beauty of this plaza is remarkable, both for the fantastic architecture that surrounds it and for the originality of having a typical Cuban tree, a ceiba, in the centre of the square, surrounded by a rigid iron fence.
