You can't miss Cayo Sabinal, an islet in Cuba as beautiful as it is peaceful, located north of Camagüey. Also called Isla de Sabinal (Sabinal Island), west of bahía de Nuevitas (Nuevitas Bay), and surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, it receives this peculiar name because of the unique vegetation of the area, similar to sandalwood and juniper. In addition, a large number of mangroves can be seen.

This very special island which belongs to the Jardines del Rey archipelago is separated from the mainland by bays and coves, and also features beautiful beaches and a large number of wetlands. It is curious that this island, along with others in the same archipelago, is the setting for the novel Islands in the Gulf by Ernest Hemingway, where the well-known writer used to sail with his yacht "Pilar".

The Faro Colón (Columbus Lighthouse), one of the oldest in the country, built-in 1848 on the northern tip of the island, is the main guide for ships sailing in the Bahamas Channel.

It has a natural reserve of pink flamingos, a great attraction for tourists and lovers of these exotic birds. In addition, within its fauna they emphasize small mammals of the family of the rodents called jutías; the jicoteas, small and friendly aquatic and semi-aquatic turtles; deer, pigs, bovine and tocororos, a type of Cuban bird. It is also common to hear the songbird called negrito, because of its dark colour. As for its flora, you can see orchids, mangroves, junipers, oaks, cedars and guayacanes, among other unique species.

What are the Best Places to See in Cayo Sabinal?

Cayo Sabinal is located in the municipality of Camagüey, in the Jardines del Rey and has 33 km of long beaches that you can relax on. These are surrounded by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, clear turquoise waters that you will not be able to resist testing. On its fine white sand, you can spread out your towel and relax in the sun while listening to the coming and going of the waves. 

If you are looking for an adventure, from these beautiful beaches you can take a sea excursion to the  Faro Colón (Columbus Lighthouse), a historic building built in 1847 to guide the ships that sailed the Bahamas Canal. You can hire a guide and learn about its history. 

Cayo Sabinal also has a rich fauna, where, if you are careful, you will find spices like jutias, jicoteas, deer, pigs, wild cattle and the tocororo, the national bird of Cuba. In addition, you will see different species of ducks that migrate during the winter to be able to reproduce in this impressive virgin environment of Cuba.

When is the Best Time to Go to Cayo Sabinal?

The climate of Cuba divides into the rainy season that goes from May to October, there might even be hurricanes, and the dry season is between November and April and they are the best months that you can choose to travel to Cayo Sabinal. The temperature in them normally fluctuates between 25 and 30°C and there are no great variations between day and night. 

What is the Best Way to Get to Cayo Sabinal?

The best way to get to Cayo Sabinal is from the city of Trinidad where you can find different transportation such as a bus, taxi or a rental car. There are also connections by train but it is not recommended because of the delays that usually occur. 

Another way is from Havana from where you will be able to take a flight to Camagüey and once there, in a taxi, to arrive there.

The best option to stay near Cayo Sabinal are some of these resorts; Club Amigo Mayanabo, is located in Nuevitas, has a garden where you can enjoy the shade of their umbrellas and drink something refreshing; Gran Club Santa Lucia located on the excellent playa Santa Lucía (Santa Lucia beach) from where you can reach Cayo Sabinal without any problem; or  Brisas Santa Lucia, modern building ideal for families, groups, weddings and honeymoons. 

All these hotels are not located in Cayo Sabinal but with the help of a taxi, you can easily get there.
