The Parque Ignacio Agramonte (Ignacio Agramonte Park) declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site, is dedicated to the Mayor General Ignacio Agramonte (Major General Ignacio Agramonte), one of the leaders during the liberation of Cuba. It is found in the historic center of Camagüey, where there also is Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria (Church of Our Lady of the Candelaria).
A fascinating monument was erected there as a tribute to the general, which was discovered in 1912 by his widow Amalia Simoni. This interesting sculptural ensemble is formed by a representation of the Statue of Liberty, a battle scene, and Ignacio Agramonte himself on his horse raising his sword, a work made in bronze and pink granite by the Italian sculptor Salvatore Buemi.
This site is surrounded by four majestic royal palms in memory of the patriots shot in the struggle. These palms are used because the Cubans were forbidden to honour their martyrs with statues, with these trees being a secret symbol among them. This gives the place a solemn character and deep respect, as well as its surroundings, where the Catedral de Camagüey (Cathedral of Camagüey) and a rest area with beautiful gardens are located.
