The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Merced (Church of Nuestra Señora de la Merced) is one of the most important buildings in Camagüey. In its interior, it keeps astonishing relics that are unique in Cuba, such as a magnificent Santo Sepulcro (Holy Sepulchre), made from more than 20,000 cast silver coins.
The church was built in 1747 and remodelled in the mid-19th century and is now under the custody of the bishop of Camagüey. Besides the Holy Sepulchre, bones are kept in the catacombs and different religious objects are exhibited. There is a beautiful tabernacle dating from 1733.
The building is located in what is now called the Plaza de los Trabajadores, although it was previously known as the Plaza de la Merced in honour of this imposing church. In this busy and central plaza, it is worth stopping at the Museo Casa Natal del general Ignacio Agramonte (Birthplace Museum of general Ignacio Agramonte).
