The Galería de Arte Universal Alejo Carpentier (Universal Art Gallery Alejo Carpentier) is located in the fabulous historical center of the city of Camagüey, in Cuba. It is a former family home built in the second half of the 19th century.
This institution gets the name of the Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier, one of the best known Cuban novelists and essayists, and one of the most resounding names when we speak of Spanish-American Literature. When he won the Miguel de Cervantes Prize in 1977, he used the money to develop cultural programs and to buy reproductions of universal art, which are now exhibited in this gallery and in nine other cultural institutions in Cuba.
One of the rooms has a permanent exhibition of extraordinary reproductions of universal art. The other halls have fabulous contemporary art works by many local, national and foreign artists.
The social purpose of this cultural institution is to exhibit and disseminate these works of universal art so that they can be seen by anyone who is interested. It is also important to promote the permanent exhibition of Agustín Bejarano, as well as the other contemporary artists, both from Camagüey and from all over the country.
Furthermore, we cannot forget other interesting activities that take place in the different rooms: the expo-sale of works of visual artists of the province, the room for reproductions of universal paintings, concerts and conferences, and of course, lively gatherings.
