The Parque Casino Campestre (Casino Campestre Park) is the heart of the town of Camagüey in Cuba. Officially known as Parque Gonzalo de Quesada, it is possibly the largest park you will find inside a Cuban city.
Packed with green areas, the site also offers monuments that recall the history, culture and creativity of the region. In this space, a casino was built, promoted by the richest citizens of the time. One of the figures who provided funding for the cause was Salvador Cisneros Betancourt.
This public place inaugurated in the 19th century served as a venue for several agricultural and livestock exhibitions. In 1895, it was used as a camp for the Cadiz Battalion of the Spanish army, during which time a large number of industrial and artistic products were shown to the public, as well as hosting scientific and agricultural conferences.
The park was restored in 1902 with the arrival of the new neo-colonial republic, with the aim of beautifying it. In 1916, the city council of the time agreed to name the Casino after Gonzalo Quesada, in homage to the local patriot. A name that, to this day, has not been used by the locals.
